Cantus Firmus

Privacy

Cantus Firmus collects nothing about you. It has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no server of its own. This page says what the app does touch and why, because “we collect nothing” is worth more when it is specific.

What leaves your phone

One thing, and only when you ask for it: a request for an audio file.

  • Synthesised recordings

The MIDI renderings are not bundled with the app — they stream from a storage bucket when you press play. That request carries what any web request carries: your IP address and the name of the file. Nothing identifies you, nothing is logged for analysis, and no request is made until you start something playing.

  • Links you choose to open

Tapping a reference link, a translation credit or a commentary source hands the address to Safari. Tapping an Apple Music recording hands it to Apple Music. From that point you are on someone else’s site or in someone else’s app, under their privacy policy rather than this one.

  • Feedback you send

The About screen can open a pre-filled email or a GitHub issue. The message is composed in your own Mail app or browser and nothing is sent unless you send it. What is pre-filled is the app version and the catalogue version — which a reply would otherwise have to ask for — and the name of the piece you were looking at, never anything about you.

What stays on your phone

  • Your notes and corrections

Anything you write is kept in a file of its own on the device. It is never uploaded, never synchronised and never read by anyone but you, and a catalogue update does not overwrite it. It is included in an encrypted iPhone backup exactly as any other app’s data is, because that is your backup rather than ours.

  • Your Apple Music library

With your permission the app reads your Favorite Songs playlist so it can show which movements you have favourited and how often you have played them. That reading happens entirely on the device. The app does not copy your library, does not send it anywhere, and cannot change it — favouriting a track is something only Apple’s own Music app can do, which is why the heart in Cantus Firmus hands you over to Music rather than doing it itself. You can refuse the permission, or withdraw it later in Settings, and everything else in the app goes on working.

  • Quiz scores and app settings

Your best score per quiz category, and small preferences such as text size, are stored in the app’s own settings on the device.

The App Store listing for Cantus Firmus declares Data Not Collected. This page is the long version of that declaration.

Children

The app is a reference work about eighteenth-century church music. It collects no data from anyone, of any age, and has nothing directed at children specifically.

Changes, and how to ask

If this policy ever changes, the revised page will be published here with a new date below, and a release note will say so. Questions about it, or a request to know what the app holds about you — the answer being nothing — can go to giovannicoppola@gmail.com or to the issue tracker.
